Description

Picture the snow-covered slopes of the Sancy massif, the winter silence of the Auvergne mountains, snowshoe tracks pressing into the powder and, around a bend in the trail, a chamois watching the group from a distance. Snowshoe hiking in Auvergne is the winter incentive near Clermont-Ferrand that combines territorial discovery, fresh mountain air and local produce in a format that is as accessible as it is unforgettable. All you need to know is how to walk: snowshoes clip on in seconds and open up landscapes that very few activities can reach.

What truly sets the Takamaka Clermont Randonnée Raquette apart, though, is what happens along the trail. During the outing, the group stops to make their own Salers, the emblematic mountain spirit of Auvergne, and each participant leaves with their own bottle as a souvenir. Further along, a Verveine du Velay workshop led by a colourful local guide brings everyone together around one of the region's most iconic liqueurs, with secrets of production, local stories and tasting included.

Wild nature, authentic local produce and mountain conviviality: Randonnée Raquette offers a complete immersion in winter Auvergne, for groups of up to 100 people, with a tangible memory to take home in the bag, a handmade bottle of Salers.

How the activity works

1

Welcome and snowshoe fitting

On arrival at the Sancy massif site, the Takamaka Clermont guide welcomes the group and introduces the snowshoes. Fitting takes just a moment and a few steps are all it takes for everyone to find their rhythm in the snow. The guide outlines the outing programme, the route's points of interest and the mountain safety guidelines.
2

The hike and territory discovery

The group sets off on the snow-covered Sancy trails, guided by a genuine local territory ambassador who shares their knowledge of the wildlife, flora and volcanic geology. Chamois and white hares may cross the group's path depending on conditions. The silence and beauty of the winter landscapes are as much a part of the experience as the workshops woven into the route.
3

Making the Salers

At a bend in the trail, the group stops to make Salers, the emblematic mountain spirit of Auvergne. Under the guide's instruction, each participant assembles their own bottle following the traditional recipe and leaves with their personal Auvergne mountain souvenir. A festive and convivial moment right in the heart of nature.
4

The Verveine du Velay workshop and close

The route ends with the Verveine du Velay creation workshop, led by the local guide. Participants discover the secrets behind this iconic green Auvergne liqueur, its history, its botanicals and of course its tasting. The hike closes in a warm atmosphere, with every participant heading home with their Salers bottle and a head full of winter Auvergne memories.
