Description

Picture your hands gripping the rungs of a metal ladder bolted into volcanic rock, empty space beneath your feet and, looking up, a view across the Haute Dordogne valley and the summit of the puy de Sancy stretching out to the horizon. The Via Ferrata du Capucin at Mont-Dore is the mountain incentive near Clermont-Ferrand that introduces non-specialists to the vertical world in conditions of absolute safety. Sitting halfway between climbing and sporty hiking, it delivers real thrills without the technical demands of traditional rock climbing.

The Capucin cliff face is equipped with permanent fixtures bolted into the rock: ladder rungs, handrails, monkey bridges, walkways... each one securing progress along the route while keeping the genuine sensation of effort and exposure alive. The difficulty level is deliberately very moderate to suit a group discovery outing, regardless of participants' fitness levels. Takamaka Clermont's state-qualified mountain guide supervises every step with skill and care.

Via ferrata naturally creates strong group dynamics: people encourage each other, guide each other and celebrate together at every demanding passage. It is the incentive that turns a fear of heights into collective pride, and that leaves everyone with the memory of having pushed past their own limits in a truly exceptional natural setting.

How the activity works

1

Welcome at the base and equipment

On arrival at the Via Ferrata du Capucin at Mont-Dore, the Takamaka Clermont state-qualified guide welcomes the group and introduces the activity. Every participant is fitted with the necessary safety equipment (harness, lanyard, helmet) and receives an explanation of the basic techniques: how to clip in, how to move along the route and how to use the safety lanyard at each change of obstacle.
2

Setting off and the first obstacles

The group sets off along the route in an order established by the guide. The first ladder rungs and handrails give everyone the chance to find their footing, settle into a rhythm and build confidence progressively with the vertical environment. The guide supervises and encourages at every step.
3

Progressing along the cliff face

The route develops along the Capucin cliff face through a varied sequence of fixtures: ladder rungs, metal handrails, monkey bridges, walkways... The view across the Haute Dordogne valley and the summit of the puy de Sancy gradually opens up, rewarding every metre gained on the rock. The group advances together, helping each other and providing support all the way up.
4

Summit, descent and close

Once the via ferrata route is complete, the group takes in the exceptional panorama before the supervised descent organised by the guide. The return to the base of the cliff is often the most celebratory moment: the pride of having cleared every obstacle is shared naturally and team cohesion is at its peak.

Why choose Takamaka ?

The Via Ferrata du Capucin is a site chosen with care by Takamaka Clermont for its difficulty level, perfectly calibrated for a corporate discovery group, and for the exceptional quality of its panoramas. With 7 years of experience in Auvergne and an intimate knowledge of the Sancy massif, Takamaka Clermont knows exactly how to supervise a vertical activity so that every participant progresses in the best possible conditions of safety and confidence.

Every session is led by a state-qualified mountain guide, the only serious guarantee of safety in a vertical environment. This is not a general-purpose facilitator: it is a mountain professional specifically trained to lead non-specialists on via ferrata routes, with the pedagogy needed to reassure the most hesitant participants and celebrate everyone's progress.

Via ferrata generates team cohesion that is difficult to replicate elsewhere, because it places each participant in front of a personal challenge while the whole group acts as witness and support. Takamaka Clermont manages everything end-to-end, from logistics to on-the-rock supervision, so that all you need to do is live the experience.
